Day 23: More TableTop

This episode of Tabletop features an alternate version of a game played last season, Ticket to Ride. The Europe edition had a few more rules, but was more or less the same game. This one was interesting for how close it came.

As Wil says at the beginning of the episode, this is a very strong game to get folks interested in board gaming. The rules are easy, the level of active competitiveness is generally low, yet the potential for multiple strategies is very high.

Take a look and remind me to thank Mr. Wheaton for carrying the Month of The Nerd...

Day 17: The Nature of Spoilers Today

Alright, I've still kicking, sorry about the delay. Turns out my extra shift at work has me in front of a computer with no students coming in, so it's BLOG TIME!

First, for those who don't know what I'm talking about, let's turn to Urban Dictionary (heh) for a definition:

When someone reveals a previously unknown aspect of something which you likely would have rather learned on your own.

*discussions of art media such as video games, movies, etc. especially vulnerable.
"The following review contains spoilers!"

Thank you, Doctor Song.
When a writer creates a story, they pace it a certain way, expect the plot points to be revealed in order, and tailor the entire effect of the narrative to enhance this (assuming they've done a decent job). That's a fairly simple concept. Learning something, especially something that is a major turning moment/surprise, out of order can actively sully the audience's experience. And, once something is spoiled, it can never be un-spoiled. It's not fair for any party to spoil something without permission (and even then, I'd say use your best judgement).
I'm going to add my own addendum: If the topic of a spoiler is several years old and was moderately available/popular, the spoiler is completely kosher. Anything else should be off-limits until established otherwise by the uninformed (an unspoiled) party.

In example, this post will contain spoilers to Star Wars: The Empire Strikes back. If you have not seen this movie or learned what the major twists are, that is your fault and I refuse to step lightly when discussion the subject. If I was to discuss, say, the Ender's Game movie, however, I would make sure to throw up spoilers. In fact, due to the new medium in which the story is being related, I'd probably also put an embargo on any future discussions of the novel as well.

If someone had told me that Darth Vader was Luke Skywalker's father before I saw the climactic scene, all the sense of wonder in the movie would have died. All the cinematography leading up to that moment would have been obvious and, in translation, ineffective.
"I am your father." "Well, duh."

This doesn't mean you can't write about the subject, you just need to mark it appropriately. See Wil Wheaton's review of Star Trek: Into Darkness for one example of an appropriately marked spoiler.

I've seen MANY Facebook arguments where folks I generally consider intelligent claim that there's nothing wrong with spoilers and that it is the reader/viewers fault for stumbling onto them. The generally say this after having been scolded for spoiling something recent/relevant.

I stop considering these folks intelligent pretty quickly after that (well, that's a bit harsh, but you get my meaning).

The nature of sites like Facebook or Twitter means that a viewer has no way to filter what they see once they've followed a person/account. If the person/account let's it be known that they post spoilers frequently, then that is the follower's fault. MOST PEOPLE DO NOT STATE THIS. And even if they did, the nature of these websites (and similar ones) still make this difficult to recognize before hand.

The simple way to avoid an issue is to mention that you're about to spoil something, give it a bit of space (because we read complete thoughts faster than we think), and THEN write the spoiler. If it is an image, LINK to it, don't post it on your account. Blog writers have many more options, but I'll assume you bloggers aren't dicks and don't spoil things because you know better.

Pretty simple, yes? Well, that's only half my spiel, the one that pertains to the general public. Now I'm going to complain about the media.

THIS is good advertising!
For some reason, today's advertisers have lost all creativity. Recently, I stumbled upon a twitter post (a re-tweet that I couldn't avoid) that had some VERY major spoilers in regards to upcoming Spider-Man events. The advertisement, then, was simply to say what was going to happen down the line. No lead up, no subtlety, just a spoiler for a comic issue that isn't even on the stands yet.

... What? Why? Have they forgotten that anticipation of the unknown is a powerful tool? Back it my day, comic books would come in BLACK BAGS if the cover was too spoiler-y.

Movie commercials now spoil 90% of the story (or, in comedies, all of the funny parts).

Book descriptions lately seem to tell what the turning point is for the character as if assuming you're never going to find out for yourself anyway.

Comic books are spoiled before they ever reach the stand ALL THE TIME. Apparently just so readers (or critics) can talk about them in advance. Uhg. It isn't just about how it's done that gives a reader enjoyment. I didn't like knowing that Doc Ock was taking over Spidey before it happened, it made the preceding issues leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Video games... Well, actually, that's still a decently safe medium. Unless you frequent message boards on the given title, but that's a risk you take. I assume this is so due to the length of most games meaning the general population has no interest in them. A gamer that plays through a game probably realizes that some of their enjoyment derives from getting to a particular point ON YOUR OWN.

I'm hoping for a day when instant gratification isn't the only form of advertising pandered to. My favorite thing about the RISK: Legacy version is because it has secrets that I have yet to uncover, and a truly have no idea what lies behind the sealed envelopes/sections. Something new and exciting is waiting for me, and I don't have to play each game with the knowledge of what comes next. Sure, I might not like the surprise, but at least it was a surprise and not a stretch of time dreading the moment.

... Basically, just think about others before describing a plot twist or character death. Don't try to be obscure, because that doesn't always work. Just label an incoming spoiler clearly and give it some space. Oh, and be careful with URLs that tell too much...

Day 12ish: Drama on TableTop!

... So, I fell asleep again. Instead of some content I worked (relatively) hard to create, I'm going to let Wil Wheaton take the wheel! Well, kind of.

Tsuro and Tsuro of the Seas aren't normally my kind of games, but I think The Wife would get a lot of enjoyment out of them -- she's stated in the past that tile laying games interest her, and the rules seemed to have no nonsense. The Wife generally refuses to play a game with a recommended age above 8, but I'm generally able to convince her. Maybe I'll hunt down one of these so I'm not such a lousy (board game) husband.

Also, there's a chance to win a signed copy of this game... The thought of owning something signed by Wil Wheaton is almost bucket-list worthy, if I didn't want to add another very unlikely thing to my already improbable list.

Also, as a side and so I feel a little bit better about this sparse post, all Pokemon fans should make sure they've seen Pokemon: Origins. It is made up of four episodes that tell the story of Red as his story goes through the journey we all played in the original Red and Blue titles. There are a lot of nostalgia moments and the anime is beautiful, what more could you need?

Day 8: Some Definitions

I meant to open day one with this post but, after having forgotten that it had already become January, I obviously forgot something as silly as a blog post and wrote about something random.

Whelp, we're into the second week and I've had a truly lousy day, so I'm phoning it in and going to drop some definitions on you: four, to be exact.

Arbitrary

1. Determined by chance, whim, or impulse, and not by necessity, reason, or principle.
2. Based on or subject to individual judgment or preference.
3. Not limited by law; despotic
(Thank you, thefreedictionary.com!)

Nerd

1. A dull, ineffectual, or unattractive person.
2. A person dedicated to a nonsocial pursuit.
(Wait, what the crap, thefreedictionary.com? I'm going to another source.)

"(...)Being a nerd meant that I liked things that were a little weird. That took a lot of effort to appreciate and understand.
(...)I think a lot of us have realized that being a nerd … it’s not about what you love. It’s about how you love it."
(Much better. Thank you, Wil Wheaton!)

The Nerd

1. This is me, at least on my blog. You'll always notice that I capitalize "the" when stating the title. Otherwise the improper grammar would cause me to twinge (assuming I ever proof read...).
2. See (1). Heh.

The Arbitrary Nerd

1. My blog, where I "...Inflict my opinions on the world." And by world, I mostly mean Bryan and The Wife.
2. I don't normally care for news, nerdy or otherwise. I have a very black and white view of things I like, yet am accepting of (most) everything. Sometimes there's a point I want to get across, but most of the time this is just a place for me to write about things that interest me. Open an open-ended dialogue that doesn't need to be read or acknowledged -- I've gotten it out of my system, and that's what counts.

And that's my blog in a nutshell.
Well, you know what I mean.

TableTop - Elder Sign

What do you get when you mix Wil Wheaton, Felicia Day, and H.P. Lovecraft? An episode of TableTop that has three of my favorite things!

Check out TableTop Season 1 Episode 11:

... Now I really need to pick up a copy of Elder Sign. The game looks just confusing enough for me to get super interested in and have no one to play with v.v

Also -- first recording of The Podcast is a Lie tonight, look for it soon! And tell your friends, damn it!

Geek & Sundry: I've been missing out!

I'm bad at YouTube. I follow a few channels, but I never seem to find time to watch videos that don't involve short clips of cats being adorable. This morning, thanks to Pinterest, I noticed that Felicia Day tried out parkour. I enjoy Felicia Day and I think parkour/free running is awesome -- what could go wrong? As a video, nothing! It was a lot of fun to watch.

Then I realized there was a ton more content. Yes, this was all realized today. I really don't keep up to date with web videos and I don't even follow too many blogs. I have the same issue with podcasts -- I get recommendations all the time, but when it comes down to it, I find my attention pulled to writing, reading, or playing a video game.

Well, this is my public apology for not being supportive of the channel Geek & Sundry until now. It is a channel that is all about the things I love from some amazing people, including, but in no way limited to, Felicia Day and Wil Wheaton. My unfamiliarity with the rest of the creators will be something I rectify ASAP!

Why am I posting about this? Because I'm going to make an effort to catch up on all the previous content on G&S AND keep current with new things, and I'll be posting a weekly favorites section where I link (and probably rave about) a video I thought was amazing and no one should miss out on (as I have been). This weeks is going to Felicia Day's parkour/free running adventure:

Also, I've been inspired. In college, a group of friends and I used to play RISK almost every night. When I moved to NY a few years ago, that stopped. Whelp, I'm planning on moving back to MA soon. This Summer would be the earliest. I'm hoping I can get my friends together regularly when I'm up there and I'd like to incorporate a Game Night series where I tape my friends and I playing different games (or just RISK, if that's all they're interested in) and work it into a feature on here.

If that sounds a bit dull or stupid... bear with me! This just came to me this morning!

Alright, now I'm going to get back to work...

Note: If I'm missing more wonderful channels on YouTube, let me know! The Nerd is always looking to increase his nerdy level.

The Nerd's Bucket List

I know, I know, I should be working on my Pull List Review. I'll have another post up by the end of the week. For now, however, I feel like talking about me!

I discovered my birthday present a bit early (aka as the Wife showed me but told me I can't have it until February), and it was an item that I have always wanted. I jokingly said that it was something I could scratch off the ol' Nerd Bucket List. The Wife, doing what wives do, asked what else was on the list. And I said...

Nothing. I was stumped. Normally, I find the idea of Bucket Lists kind of silly (what are you supposed to do when you complete it, commit seppuku?), but a list of nerdy things I wanted to do in my life but hadn't done yet appealed to me.

And so I will (attempt) to start a Nerd Bucket List in this post. I'll add items in the future as they come to me (using the tag Bucket List so they can be quickly compared), but this will serve as the base:

------------------------------

THE NERD'S BUCKET LIST

-Own Darth Revan 30th Anniversary Fan's Choice Figure
First item on, first item off. I'm a HUGE fan of Darth Revan (from the Knights of the Old Republic video game, as well as The Old Republic MMO), and the Wife got me this figure, as well as Darth Malak (again, Knights of the Old Republic) and some other misc figures. She knows me so well!
WOOOOOT! One down!

-Go to a Star Wars Celebration
I've always wanted to attend one of these, but they always fell during important dates at school/work (working in Higher Education, specifically Residence Life and Housing, means we end up training every year around the Celebration). Hopefully next year the dates will align better! Also... hopefully Disney being on board doesn't change anything too much! Speaking of Disney (and Star Wars)...

-Go to a Star Wars Weekend at Disney World
This kind of goes hand in hand with the above, but the Wife and I love Disney World and I think it would be perfect to go on one of their Star Wars days. We haven't done it yet because A) it isn't exactly cheap and B) I really dislike crowds, and nothing draws a crowd at Disney like Star Wars days (or so the internet tells me).
I guess Disney doesn't like us as much as we like it...

-Get Published in a Fandom
One of the blog writers I follow, Amy Ratcliffe from Geek With Curves, just got published in Star Wars Insider #138. I wouldn't mind being published in a magazine of a fandom I relate to, but even more I'd love to get a fiction story published -- say a Star Wars novel or the like. First, I'll need to finish and get something of my own published, but I'm hoping my MFA Thesis course next semester will get me pretty close to that goal. Then I'll work towards this step.

-(UPDATE!)Play Star Wars Battlefront 3
This is kind of a risky one, simply because there's no confirmation the Battlefront 3 will ever come out (no matter how much I pester Lucas Arts Games on Twitter). That being said, I loved the originals and think, with today's technology and game comparisons, a third installment will be amazing and a matter of time. Update: Battlefront 3 was announced! Yes! This is totally going to happen!!!

And now that it's on my Bucket List, I guess Lucas Arts needs to get on this, or won't they feel silly?

-Go to San Diego Comic Con
I love Boston Comic Con (I've been several times) and enjoyed NYCC (I went once), but San Diego seems so far away that I never really imagined I'd make it. Then, to my surprise, the Wife said she was sad we missed it -- she had seen some new and events at the convention and was actively interested (NOTE: the Wife is NOT a nerd, despite all my attempts to turn her to the Nerd Side). So this is making it on the list with hopes for a future SDCC!

If you're asking why I wouldn't go by myself... Well, I REALLY don't like crowds, but I feel marginally better with a friendly face.

Nathan Fillion!
-Get Retweeted by Nathan Fillion
I love that guy.

-See Star Wars Episodes 7-9
I mean, I know they're coming out now and I know I'll see them... so let's get something I can definitely mark off this thing.

-Watch Every Episode of Star Wars with my Children
I don't have any children yet but, one day, they WILL watch Star Wars.

-Own Every Issue of Amazing Spider-Man
This got infinitely easier now that the series ended.

You know, unless it starts back up. Again. Which I expect (hope) it will.

-(NEW!)Play a boardgame with Wil Wheaton
I see no reason why this would EVER come to pass, but I enjoy everything Wil Wheaton has done recently and I especially love his YouTube show on the Geek and Sundry Channel, TableTop.

------------------------------
That will have to do for now. As I said before, I will continue to add to this as time goes on, so if any suggestions that you feel fit here, let me know in the comment section below!

I'm actually looking forward to crossing these off. I rescind my previous opinion on Bucket Lists.

P.S. I wonder if almost knocking author Nick Flynn over at a reading should go on here... It WOULD be nice to have another item crossed off my list...
